Resisting False Climate Solutions

Is humanity ready to engineer a biosphere? It is human nature to resist tranformational change necessary to survive, and seek all types of half-assed reform measures to continue bad habits. Rising Tide North America has released an important new report entitled “Hoodwinked in the Hothouse: False Solutions to Climate Change”. Sadly, much of the task of biocentric climate activists is seeking to persuade society to stop digging a deeper climate hole.
More technological alteration of global ecological systems — such as those proposed with industrial agrofuels, biochar, clean coal and geo-engineering — will not succeed in protecting the climate and biosphere. We need tranformational change such as powering down the industrial growth machine including an end to coal and ancient forest logging (sadly the report does not raise greenwashing of such logging by FSC, RAN, Greenpeace and others). Anything that does not fully protect and restore natural ecosystems will only worsen the global ecological and economic crises.

    Right on Barry, great topic.
When I first learned of climate change I first went to technological solutions. I thought that lots of solar panel, hybrid cars and other purely technological solutions would resolve the situation.
However, as I have learned of the severety and scope of the issues at hand, I have found that those essentially will not work. There are simply too many of us. And, since these issues are global, the entire global population simply cannot impliment these solutions.
It is therefore a necessity to reduce, conserve, create efficiency. Technological fixes, at least the ones spoken about in mainstream culture will not work. The issues are too large and too integrated into how our 'western type' daily lives operate as they do today.
    For me,
I have given up my car and have not driven in over a year and a half.
I am a vegetarian and am transitioning to becoming a vegan.
I eat 95% organic foods and eat local as much as possible.
I do community organizing to help raise awareness and help people transition.
My water footprint and energy footprint is extremely small.
And I try to get out and make as many new friends as I can every day.
These issues are absolutely outstandingly amazingly severely pronounedly HUGE!!!!!
A better way of living and a better way of life is awaiting us after every transition we make to help the earth and ourselves.
Change my brothers and sisters!!! It is the only thing that takes place in the universe!! CHANGE!!!!!!
And best of all its FUNNNNN!!!

You are kidding yourself if you think the world can make the necessary cuts in emissions. Its just not poliically feasible – it should be, but it isn't.
Unless we keep all options on the table if we are to have any change of solving this problem. If you think huge radical emissions cuts are coming in the US, Europe, China etc then you are kidding yourself, unless perhaps we have a prolonged and particularly bad recession, which still may not cut emissions enough.
We can't let ideology hold us back from tackling this, the time has come for tough and possibly unpalatable decisions. That's why we have to consider nuclear, and geo-engineering projects also. We just have to be very careful with them.

  3. R. Gates says:

    Dr. Barry,
You are so right on target. The idea that we can “bio-engineer” ourselves out of the mess we'ere in is the ultimate and final ego trip of a civilization awash in technological fixes for everything. We pump our kids full of ritalin because we've allowed them to be over-stimulated with the electronic drugs of television and video games, and now we'd like to do the same to the earth itself– all so we can continue our over-consumption and cancerous life-styles.
Here is the plain truth– we (meaning modern homo-consumerous) are the cancer of the earth. We are eating the earth alive– just as any cancer will eat our own bodies alive. We would love to find some techno-fix that would allow us to continue to be cancer– something to keep our host body the earth going so we can keep up our ravenous and consumptive civilization. We are looking for techno-fixes, ritalin for the planet if you would, but in the end, the only solution is for humanity to truly change into a bio-centric lifestyle. The earth must be restored to its natural state. The forests, oceans, rivers, air, ice, and biosphere must be helped to heal and then everything we do must be seen in context of keeping the biosphere healthy. In the meantime, the earth will do everything she can to rid herself of the cancer…

  4. Right you are, the biggest challenge is not combating climate change, but convincing the world that they need to change to do so

Those responsible for CO2 emissions, mountain top desecration, and the other contributors to Global Warming are capitalistic bullies wielding their wealth against a people who are poorly represented by elected and appointed official.
When will America learn that we never needed fossil fuels? Were it not for the Dupont's, Rockefellers, etc, this nation could be a super nation in every respect by simply returning to the cultivation of the one plant that is a perfect substitute which eliminates the ravaging of our forests, pollution of ground water, oceans, seas and rivers, and the emission of CO2 and other green house gases. Namely, Cannabis Sativa L.
“If all fossil fuels and their derivatives, as well as trees for paper and construction were banned in order to save the planet, reverse Greenhouse Effects and stop deforestation: Then there is only one known, annually renewable, natural resource that is capable of providing the overall majority of the world's paper and textiles; meeting all of the world's transportation, industrial and home energy needs, while simultaneously reducing pollution, rebuilding the soil, and cleaning the atmosphere all at the same time…And that substance is the same one that did it all before 1937—Cannabis Hemp…Marijuana!” Jack Herer, “The Emperor Wears No Clothes”, 11th Edition, ch. 2, p.12-13. Jack's book should be mandatory reading for anyone concerned about the economic, and security survival of America. Cebes

Plants have always been humanity's salvation…and they would be again, if we would only listen to them.
Where is George Washington Carver when you need him!

  7. Richard Dadzie says:

You are absolutely right. Plants have been our savior and will continue to be. Dr. Barry's post is very strong and rightfully so given the rise of deforestation for agrofuels purposes in Brazil, Malaysia and elsewhere. Clearing forests to plant cash crops is not a correct approach. A correct will be to take more aggressive measures to dealing with the issues of climate change, such as cutting our dependence on fuels and as Dr. Barry argues, transforming our societies in such a way that we turn of the industrial machine that was started in the late 18th century.
