China Conduit for Illegal Rainforest Wood
China is the largest consumer of wood from tropical rainforests in developing countries; and a major conduit to the United States, Japan and European Union for furniture and wood products from countries where illegal logging is common and human rights records are poor. China accounts for over half the log exports from Papua New Guinea, Myanmar and Indonesia. About 70 percent of imported timber is converted into furniture, plywood and other processed products for export. If you buy a product made from tropical timbers, it was likely stolen from a poor country suffering rainforest loss and laundered through China.
